A rare statement. BasketNews says so: the Knicks don’t put many out. And when they do, it’s to announce that Karl-Anthony Towns’s extension is pushed back to later in the 2026-27 season. Later. A franchise comes out of its shell to say later. That’s a moment gone wrong, and I’m going to redo it for you.
Saturday, half past eight. The caretaker switches off half the strip lights, which is all I’ve got. The two school fête spotlights on the table. [jingle]
“Mesdames et messieurs, dames en heren. An official statement. Concerning the contract extension of…” Two-second pause. “…Karl-Anthony Towns!” [drum roll, cut by me] “…pushed back to later in the season.”
And that’s when the sound system has an opinion. It goes quiet.
Because here’s the problem: you can’t make noise over a postponement. I tried. Bobby Marks, quoted by BasketNews, says the Knicks, in his words, “don’t want this to become a distraction moving forward”. Distraction is my job. A time-out is thirty seconds of me. They’ve got the rest of the season, and they’re keeping those seconds for later.
There’s even a deadline: 30 June, for Towns, Josh Hart, Miles McBride and Tyler Kolek. Four names, four possible introductions in the dark. I’ve already written them on a card, with the two-second pauses.
On 30 June, if they need someone for the announcement, I’ve got a jingle. Just saying.
It’s true, we checked: BasketNews.
