The news that shoots from distance

Ty Jerome tops NBA scoring after three games: the table recounted, it’s on the sheet

After three games, Ty Jerome, the 29-year-old Memphis Grizzlies guard, leads the NBA in scoring with 34.7 points a game, 104 in total. Memphis is unbeaten, and his 45 points in the opener against the Jazz are a franchise record for an opening game.

Martine at a scorer's table in a community sports hall checks a circled total on her paper score sheet with a four-colour pen.

Ty Jerome has scored a hundred and four points in three games. Forty-five against the Jazz, twenty-eight against the Warriors, thirty-one against the Kings. I did the sum on the corner of my folder, in black biro. It comes out right. Thirty-four point seven on average, top scorer in the league.

He scored the forty-five of the first night in thirty-one minutes. It’s a Memphis record for an opening game. At our place, thirty-one minutes is what a starter plays when the coach has forgotten he has a bench. I don’t comment. Noted.

He is the second Grizzly to pass a hundred points over the first three games of a season, after Ja Morant. A column with two names in it reads quickly. Percentages: fifty-six point three from the field, forty-two point nine from three. I copy them down, I don’t argue with them.

There’s one line at the bottom of the source that I underline in red. The three teams beaten are twelfth, fourteenth and fifteenth in the West, and two haven’t won yet. It changes nothing on the sheet. A sheet doesn’t note who was on the other side, it notes the points. Next page is 27 October, at Utah. Then Portland, then the Thunder at home on 7 November.

Jeff Teague said he “disrespected him two years ago” and that now “he really puts the guys through hell”. The table, for its part, has never disrespected anyone. It waits for the buzzer.

A hundred and four points, Martine, and not one exclamation mark. For us, that’s three raffles.

Three games, three wins, a hundred and four points. Sheet signed, nobody goes back to it.
